I’ve always wondered what people were thinking when they try to present their information to people on a web site. It normally looks like this:
Hi! Welcome to my page! We specialize in yadda yadda blah blah blah, and we’re the first ever to offer it in your area! Our expert staff is the reason why you should do business with us because we don’t have a clue what else we’re supposed to say here, but don’t you like it when we brag or try to be cute? Ha, ha, ha, ha! Anyway, thanks for stopping by!
Good grief.
Where’s the hook?
By that I mean,
Follow up:
USP. You know, excellent service, not available anywhere else, lowest prices… you need to spend a lot of time thinking about this. What are you going to do for them that others simply aren’t doing? If you get stuck, focus on the “service” because customer service on the internet sucks for the most part.
Where’s the headline hook?
I don’t care what you’ve learned, I dare you to try this. Chances are, you’ve probably been to one or more of my sites, and guess what? They all have big fat headlines at the top of the page.
There’s a good reason why. If I don’t get your attention, and I have a “welcome to my cute page” message, you’re gone. Cute doesn’t sell. EVER!
The trick with headlines is to ask “What can I say so that if they read my headline they’ll HAVE to keep reading?”
Here is an example:
“19 Year Old Boy Discovers The Secrets to Closing 92% of His Knock-On-Door Sales Deals By Getting Rejected Ruthlessly By Women”
What salesman isn’t going to keep reading?
Check this one out:
“Big City Playboy Get’s Laughed Out of Small Town”
Who would pass a headline like that up?
If you insist on not using a headline, it’s easy. Just write:
1. Who We are
2. What We Do
3. What We Have
4. What It Will Do For You
5. What We Want You To Do
Step 5 is usually the biggest mistake people fail to make. I just went to a web site that did everything above but step 5 so what now? Should I just start clicking? Should I call you? Place an order?
When your visitors get confused, they leave. They have dinner to make, laundry to do, a TV program to watch, kids to pick up from school, the phone is ringing… the last thing they want to do is have to figure out what the hell you’re saying, or what they should do.
Tell them!
While this is obviously NOT the Ninja Formula, it’s probably a hell of a lot better than what 80% of the web sites are doing out there.
