When we visualize what we want, we tend to scatter our focus. Most people don’t keep their attention on what they want long enough to really get visual with it. A person visualizing owning a new car will start out visualizing the basic outline of it. They’ll choose a color, and maybe get a fuzzy idea about what it’s like to drive it. Then they’ll recall a memory when they first saw the car, which might remind them of someone they know, emotions will pop into the picture of good or bad, then they’ll start thinking about how their sister doesn’t like the person they’re thinking of and why, and before you know it, you’re off into left field – so to speak, not thinking about the car anymore, but about something totally different!
Has something like this ever happened to you when you’ve tried visualizing?
There is a simple remedy to “see” our life the way we want it. All that is required is a writing utensil and a piece of paper.
It’s mind boggling to me when I talk with people that want to become a success. Obviously, modeling the most successful people in the world is a great start, yet when I mention the power of writing out your visuals on paper, most people pass it off as unnecessary when it’s the most important tool you can use to live the life you’ve always wanted.
Now, you’re absolutely right if you think it takes effort to write it out on paper. After all, there is so much more to be done. We could be taking care of the kids, paying our bills, and good grief, we just got done working all day, the last thing we want to do is work more. What about TV? What about video games? Movies? Bars? Clubs? Church? Family time? Events?
How will we ever find time?
After helping thousands of people, I found out that the most important thing I could do was to get them to convince me that they really wanted to do what it takes to be successful. I’ve refused many clients simply because they talked a good game, but weren’t willing to change anything they were doing. This is the definition of insanity – doing the same thing over and over again expecting a different result. It’s a harsh reality to look square in the eye, but if you aren’t living the life you’ve always wanted, then you’re doing something wrong and it’s now time for you to do something different. Fortunately, you can find all the things to do right in the pages of this book.
No doubt, we all know through the countless of books, courses, seminars, and success-getting material out there visualization is important to achieving success. In fact, it’s the 2nd step of the process taught in this book which you’re learning right now. You need to be able to visualize clearly your life the way you’d like it to be.
I’ve heard all the excuses (and even used a few myself)… “I don’t have time to write. I don’t know how to write. I don’t like writing. I can’t think of what to write. What if people find out what I’ve written, its private!” This is just a sample list of excuses you’ll hear people say. People that make these excuses are only delaying the inevitable – when you write out what you’ll see as you answer the question taught in the first chapter, you’ll begin the necessary process to actually achieving success!
Writing etches things in your mind so clearly. It is said we can only think up to 7 thought clusters at a time. This means that in order to get as clear of a picture as we can get, we must write these thoughts out on paper so that we are free to think deeper and in more detail. Our first 7 thoughts will lead into more and your enthusiasm begins to build as you realize what you’re actually doing is “painting your picture with words.” Once you have these details written on paper, you have your own piece of art to review any time you desire – which for the most part, should be every day!
Fortunately, if you’ve found yourself not knowing what to write just follow the easy-to-apply instructions in this book and get started. If you don’t think you have time to write it down, there is no reason to keep going. There is no hope for you and all is lost, and your life will be miserable for eternity.
Just kidding!
Jokes aside, lighten up! It’s easy for anyone to find spare time to write. The beauty about it is you don’t have to do it all in one shot (even though once you start and build momentum you’ll want to keep going all the way to the end until there is nothing left to write – which you’ll find to never happen) you’ll always keep writing.
Now, if there is any important chapter in this book that should really stick with you, it would be all of them of course, but this one in particular. Why? Trying to persuade someone to write on paper I’ve found to be one of the hardest things to do in my line of work. Sometimes it seems that it would be better to just say “look here idiot, if you don’t write things down, you’re wrong, you’re a loser, you won’t get what you want” but then again, who would read my book if I said something like that?
Of course, I could always cite studies from Harvard about writing goals on paper as proof that it is smart, good, and works, or reference stories about success of people that did write things down on paper, but by now, chances are that you’ve already seen these, so why repeat?
Look, just give it a go. If all you have to do is write things on paper, why not give it a shot? I promise to make it easy. Here are your instructions.
With your ideal life in mind (see chapter one) answer the following questions. Take all the time you need to answer them when you find time to do this.
What will you see?
Colors?
Faces?
Money?
Shadows?
Textures?
Material possessions?
Vacation hot spots?
Doing for a living?
What does your perfect average day look like?
What’s the first thing you see when you wake up?
What will you hear? (Yes, you can visualize sounds)
Others tell you what?
What do you say to yourself as you look in the mirror?
What accomplishments are people pointing out to you?
What will you feel?
What are you touching?
What emotions do you feel now as you think about your perfect average day?
How grateful do you feel knowing what you’re writing is actually going to manifest as a result of applying the strategies in this book?
